Edward IV (Second Reign), 1471–1483
Edward IV’s second reign brought renewed stability to the English currency following the turbulence of the Wars of the Roses. Coinage continued in the established late‑medieval hammered tradition, with London and the ecclesiastical mints of York and Durham producing distinctive regional varieties. Issues of this period are identified by their initial marks, bust styles, and local die characteristics, particularly at Durham where special permission allowed dies to be engraved on site. Although the denominations remained conservative, the series offers rich scope for study, reflecting both political consolidation and the varied practices of late 15th‑century minting.
