Edward IV (Second Reign). 1471–1483. Halfpenny. Durham mint under Bishop William Dudley. Obverse E[DWARD] DEI GRA RE[(X)], crowned bust facing, with V to left of neck. Reverse CIVITAS [DER]AM, long cross pattée with three pellets in each angle and D in centre. Withers Durham Type 4a. Initial mark Rose. 13 mm. A very rare Durham ecclesiastical issue, struck from locally made dies under special permission granted in 1473. The E of REX is markedly low. Cracked in two places but stable.
