EDWARD IV (Second Reign) or RICHARD III. 1471-1485. Penny [ EDWARD] [DI] [G]RA REX ANGL, crowned bust facing. ® CIVITAS E[BOR]ACI, long cross pattée with three pellets in each angle; quatrefoil in centre. 16 mm. Struck at the ecclesiastical mint of York. The portion of the flan bearing the king's name has been removed by clipping, and only a small part of the initial mark survives. The initial marks used for Edward IV pennies of this particular York type are small annulet, cross-in-circle or rose, whereas the sole initial mark used for the Richard III coin is a sun and rose. |
