Edward IV (Second Reign) or Richard III. 1471–1485. Penny. Struck at the ecclesiastical mint of York. Obverse: [EDWARD] [DI] [G]RA REX ANGL, crowned bust facing. Reverse: CIVITAS E[BOR]ACI, long cross pattée with three pellets in each angle; quatrefoil in centre. 16 mm. The portion of the flan bearing the king’s name has been removed by clipping, and only a small part of the initial mark survives. Edward IV pennies of this York type use small annulet, cross‑in‑circle or rose initial marks, whereas the sole initial mark for Richard III is a sun and rose.
