VESPASIAN
69–79 AD
Titus Flavius Vespasianus emerged from the chaos of AD 69 as the founder of the Flavian dynasty. A seasoned general with a reputation for discipline and practicality, he restored stability after the civil wars and initiated major building projects, including the Flavian Amphitheatre (Colosseum). His reign emphasised financial recovery, administrative reform, and consolidation of imperial authority. Vespasian’s coinage is rich in variety, blending traditional Roman virtues with themes celebrating victory in Judaea and the restoration of order. His denarii are prized for their bold portraiture and historically significant reverse types.
