NERVA
96–98 AD
Nerva, a respected senator of long service, became emperor in AD 96 following the assassination of Domitian. His brief reign marked the beginning of the adoptive emperors and restored stability after years of autocracy. Known for moderation, clemency, and cooperation with the Senate, Nerva sought to repair relations strained under his predecessor. His adoption of Trajan ensured a smooth succession and laid the foundations for a new golden age. Nerva’s coinage emphasises concord, justice, and the renewal of trust between emperor, army, and people.
