ANTONINUS PIUS

138–161 AD

Antoninus Pius succeeded Hadrian in AD 138 and presided over one of the most peaceful and prosperous periods of the Roman Empire. His reign was marked by administrative stability, financial prudence, and a strong commitment to legal reform. He avoided major military campaigns, relying instead on diplomacy and frontier consolidation. His coinage is extensive and varied, reflecting themes of abundance, stability, and imperial virtue. After his death in AD 161 he was deified, and commemorative issues were struck in his honour.
