Æ Antoninianus (22mm). Unique overstruck mule. IMP
C ALLECTVS [ ] IMP CA[R], radiate and cuirassed bust right. ® PAX AVG.,
Pax standing left holding branch and sceptre, F-O in field. Mintmark
[ML] (London). Struck at London circa AD 293. The obverse is
overstruck on an antoninianus of Carausius. The overstriking is evident
at the end of the legend as the original legend naming Carausius, IMP
CA[R] is still present. The reverse is from a die of Carausius with mint
control letters F-O in the field that were only used during his reign.
The mintmark, ML, is mostly off-flan, but the surviving tops of the two
letters can still be seen. |
