"20
CORIELTAUVI STATERS FROM DRIFFIELD"
We at A. G. & S. Gillis are proud to announce that we have
recently purchased 20 gold staters of the Corieltauvi tribe. These coins are
from two small hoards, one of five coins known as batch one and another of
fifteen coins known as batch two. For consistency we have kept the coins
in the same order as they were recorded by the British museum, prior to being
handed back to the finder, after they had gone through the treasure act.
We would like to give special thanks to
Dr. Philip de Jersey of the
Celtic Coin Index for his
invaluable comments and help in classifying and recording of these historically
interesting Iron Age coins. Also special mention goes to
Dr. John Sills for
all his hard work on the die identifications which has made it a relatively
straightforward task for all of us collectors and dealers to get it right first
time.
Please note that all coins are now sold and are no
longer available, and as such all information and images are for historical and
numismatic interest only.
BATCH ONE
Please Note: Where N/A appears the coin is no longer
available, but I will leave images, descriptions and comments for numismatic
interest and academic purposes.

SOUTH FERRIBY. Au Stater. Obverse completely
obliterated. ® Horse left, six-pointed star, "boot" (phallus?) and anchor
with pellets in spirals. S 390. Van Arsdell: 819-3. This coin CCI 04.0836.

already in the CCI. |

SOUTH FERRIBY. Au Stater. Wreath Pattern. ® Anchor
with pellets above horse facing left, sunflower under nose and star below.
S 390. Van Arsdell: 811. This coin CCI 04.0837. Comments by Dr.
Philip de Jersey: Most of the South Ferriby staters in the CCI are not
divided according to more precise VA numbers. However, as Dr. John Sills has
just done the work on identifying dies of these types, we can get a bit
further. This seems to be the second example of this reverse die, but
there are at least twenty or so coins struck from this obverse. |

VEP CORF. Au Stater. Wreath Pattern. ® Horse left, VEP above CORF
below, pellet under neck. S 410. Van Arsdell: 960-1. This coin CCI
04.0839. An exceptional coin with perfect metal and struck in such a
way that all the legend is visible. Comments by Dr. Philip de Jersey:
Purely on a statistical basis it ought to be the type with pellets beneath
the tail, ie VA 960, but I haven't been able to die-link it to any others
(either with pellets, ring or star) to confirm this. About 45 of the
pellet type recorded. |

not unusual for this type, but as struck and very very rare. Comments
