Irregular Issues
843/4–c.855 AD
Irregular stycas are thought to have been struck between 843/4 and circa 855 AD, during a period of political fragmentation and declining central authority in Northumbria. The later series includes a substantial body of these unofficial issues, which often attempt to imitate the names of rulers or moneyers found on regular coinage, while others become so blundered as to be illegible or entirely meaningless. Their retrograde inscriptions, simplified designs, and inconsistent workmanship reflect both economic instability and the widespread circulation of unofficial coinage. Although not attributable to specific kings or moneyers, they form an important and under‑researched group, produced at a time of social and monetary unrest in mid‑9th‑century Northumbria.
