VITELLIUS
69 AD
Aulus Vitellius briefly ruled during the turbulent Year of the Four Emperors. Raised to power by the legions of Germania, he entered Rome as a popular figure but soon proved unable to control the political and military chaos of the time. His short reign was marked by excess, factional violence, and the rapid advance of Vespasian’s supporters. Vitellius was killed in December AD 69, bringing his troubled rule to an end. His coinage is relatively scarce and offers a fascinating glimpse into one of the most unstable periods of Roman imperial history.
