VALENTINIAN II
375–392 AD
Valentinian II was proclaimed emperor at the age of four following the sudden death of his father, Valentinian I. His long minority placed real power in the hands of his mother, Justina, and later the powerful general Arbogast. His reign was marked by religious conflict between Nicene and Arian factions, political tension with the western court, and increasing dependence on military strongmen. In AD 392, amid a deteriorating relationship with Arbogast, Valentinian II died under suspicious circumstances in Gaul. His silver coinage, though not abundant, is admired for its refined style and often scarce mint combinations.
