TRAJAN DECIUS
249–251 AD
Gaius Messius Quintus Decius, known as Trajan Decius, was elevated to the throne by the Danubian legions and sought to model himself on the earlier emperor Trajan. His reign was marked by military crisis, particularly the Gothic invasions that threatened the Balkan provinces. Decius is also remembered for his empire‑wide edict requiring public sacrifice, which triggered the first organised persecution of Christians. His rule ended abruptly when he and his son Herennius Etruscus were killed in battle against the Goths in AD 251. His coinage is notable for its bold portraiture and strong provincial themes, including the celebrated Dacia type.
