TIBERIUS

14–37 AD

Tiberius, stepson and successor of Augustus, ruled the Roman Empire for more than two decades. A capable administrator and experienced general, he strengthened the imperial system while maintaining a cautious, often withdrawn style of governance. His later years were marked by increasing isolation on Capri and growing reliance on the Praetorian prefect Sejanus, whose ambitions destabilised the regime. Despite this, Tiberius left the empire financially secure and militarily strong. His coinage is conservative in style, reflecting continuity with Augustan imagery and emphasising stability, piety, and dynastic legitimacy.
