SEVERUS ALEXANDER
222–235 AD
Severus Alexander, last emperor of the Severan dynasty, came to the throne as a youth under the guidance of his mother, Julia Mamaea. His reign sought to restore stability after the excesses of Elagabalus, emphasising moderation, sound administration, and cooperation with the Senate. Despite these efforts, growing military pressures on the frontiers—especially from the Sassanian Empire— strained his authority. His attempts to negotiate with the Germanic tribes alienated the army, leading to his assassination in AD 235 and the beginning of the Crisis of the Third Century. His coinage is abundant and varied, reflecting themes of prosperity, piety, and imperial virtue.
