POSTUMUS
259–268 AD
Please note: Postumus coins are normally either billon or base silver.
Marcus Cassianius Latinius Postumus was the founder and first emperor of the breakaway Gallic Empire, ruling Gaul, Britain, and parts of Spain during the Crisis of the Third Century. A capable military commander, he secured the Rhine frontier and provided stability in a period of widespread turmoil. His administration was efficient and popular, and his coinage—struck in vast quantities— is notable for its strong portraiture and distinctive provincial style. Postumus resisted attempts by central Roman emperors to reclaim the western provinces until he was killed by his own troops in AD 268. His issues remain among the most collectable of the period.
