OTHO

69 AD

Marcus Salvius Otho seized power in January AD 69 after the overthrow of Galba, becoming the second emperor of the turbulent Year of the Four Emperors. His brief reign was marked by attempts at moderation and reconciliation, but the challenge from Vitellius forced him into civil war. After defeat at the Battle of Bedriacum, Otho chose suicide rather than prolong further bloodshed, earning unexpected admiration from contemporaries. His coinage, struck over only a few months, is scarce and highly sought after for its historical importance and distinctive portrait style.
