NERO
54–68 AD
Nero, last of the Julio‑Claudian emperors, remains one of the most controversial figures in Roman history. His early reign, guided by Seneca and Burrus, was marked by stability and cultural flourishing, but later years saw increasing autocracy, extravagance, and political violence. The Great Fire of Rome in AD 64 and the subsequent persecution of Christians further shaped his legacy. Nero’s coinage is extensive and varied, reflecting both the artistic refinement and the shifting propaganda of his reign. His overthrow in AD 68 plunged the empire into the Year of the Four Emperors.
