JULIAN
360–363 AD
Julian, known to history as “the Philosopher” or “the Apostate,” was one of the most remarkable rulers of the late Roman Empire. A gifted writer, soldier, and administrator, he first rose to prominence as Caesar in Gaul, where he achieved major victories against Germanic tribes. In AD 360 he was proclaimed Augustus by his troops, later ruling briefly as sole emperor. His attempts to revive traditional Roman religion and his final Persian campaign define his legacy. Julian died in AD 363, leaving a reign both brilliant and tragically short.
