JULIA MAESA
Grandmother of Elagabalus
Julia Maesa, sister of Julia Domna and matriarch of the Severan dynasty, played a decisive role in restoring her family to power after the death of Caracalla. From her base in Emesa, she used her immense wealth and influence to support the rise of her grandson Elagabalus in AD 218, and later ensured the succession of Severus Alexander. A formidable political strategist, she shaped imperial policy from behind the scenes. Her coinage reflects her authority and prestige during a period of dynastic turbulence.
