HERENNIA ETRUSCILLA
Wife of Trajan Decius
Herennia Etruscilla became Augusta upon the accession of her husband Trajan Decius in AD 249. Her coinage reflects the traditional virtues expected of an empress, with themes of modesty, piety, and harmony. After the deaths of Decius and their elder son Herennius Etruscus in battle against the Goths, she briefly retained the title of Augusta during the early reign of her younger son Hostilian. Her coins are admired for their refined portraiture and the dignified serenity they convey during a turbulent period of the empire.
