GORDIAN III
238–244 AD
Gordian III came to the throne as a teenager during the turbulent Year of the Six Emperors in AD 238. His reign brought a measure of stability after the chaos of the preceding months, aided by capable advisors and the support of the Senate. Much of his rule was dominated by campaigns against Persia, during which he achieved early successes before dying in AD 244 under uncertain circumstances. His coinage is extensive, stylistically refined, and reflects both traditional Roman virtues and the optimism of a youthful emperor.
