GALBA
68–69 AD
Servius Sulpicius Galba, a seasoned statesman and military commander, was proclaimed emperor in AD 68 after Nero’s downfall. His brief reign marked the beginning of the turbulent “Year of the Four Emperors.” Galba attempted to restore financial discipline and senatorial authority, but his austerity measures and political missteps quickly alienated both the army and the Praetorian Guard. He was assassinated in January AD 69, only seven months after taking power. His coinage is historically important, reflecting the transition from Julio‑Claudian rule to civil war.
