Wife of Antoninus Pius
Faustina the Elder, wife of Antoninus Pius, was renowned for her dignity, generosity, and public benefactions. After her death in AD 140, she was deified by the Senate, and Antoninus honoured her memory with an extensive and influential coinage series. These issues emphasised virtues such as piety, eternity, and harmony, and helped establish the model for later imperial consecration types. Her portraiture is elegant and idealised, reflecting her status as the matriarch of the Antonine dynasty.
