EUGENIUS

392–394 AD

Eugenius, a former teacher and imperial official, was elevated to the purple in AD 392 by the Frankish general Arbogast following the suspicious death of Valentinian II. Although nominally Christian, Eugenius relied heavily on pagan aristocratic support, leading to a brief cultural and political resurgence of traditional Roman religion. His rule was never recognised by Theodosius I, who marched west and defeated Eugenius at the Battle of the Frigidus in AD 394. Captured after the battle, Eugenius was executed. His coinage is scarce, struck mainly at Milan and Trier, and is highly prized for its historical significance.
