ELAGABALUS

218–222 AD

Elagabalus, born Varius Avitus Bassianus, rose to power in AD 218 backed by the Syrian legions and the influence of his powerful grandmother Julia Maesa. His reign was marked by religious upheaval, as he attempted to elevate the cult of the sun‑god Elagabal above traditional Roman worship. Court extravagance, political instability, and growing hostility from the Praetorian Guard ultimately led to his assassination in AD 222. His coinage is extensive, reflecting both traditional imperial themes and the distinctive religious imagery of his regime.
