CONSTANTIUS II

337–361 AD

Constantius II, second son of Constantine the Great, inherited the eastern provinces in AD 337 and soon emerged as the dominant ruler of the Constantinian dynasty. His long reign was marked by conflict with Persia, internal power struggles, and religious controversy, particularly over Arianism. Constantius was an energetic administrator and maintained firm control over the empire’s eastern frontiers. His silver coinage, especially the siliquae, is notable for its fine style and consistent quality. He died in AD 361 while preparing to confront his cousin Julian.
