CONSTANS

337–350 AD

Constans, youngest son of Constantine the Great, inherited the central provinces of the empire in AD 337. Initially ruling under the guardianship of his elder brothers, he soon asserted his authority and expanded his control after the death of Constantine II. His reign saw military activity along the Danube and in Britain, as well as growing tensions with the army and court officials. Constans was overthrown in AD 350 by the usurper Magnentius and killed while fleeing to Spain. His coinage includes both common bronze issues and rare silver pieces of high historical interest.
