CARACALLA
198–217 AD
Caracalla, son of Septimius Severus, ruled first as co‑emperor with his father and later with his brother Geta, whom he murdered in AD 211. His reign was marked by military campaigning and increasing autocracy. In AD 212 he issued the Constitutio Antoniniana, granting Roman citizenship to most free inhabitants of the empire. His coinage is extensive and varied, reflecting themes of military strength, divine favour, and imperial authority. Caracalla was assassinated in AD 217 during a campaign in the East.
