Commemorative Issues

330–346 AD

These commemorative issues were struck during the reign of Constantine the Great and his sons to celebrate the two great capitals of the empire: Rome and the newly founded Constantinople. Although not issued in the name of a specific emperor, they played an important role in promoting imperial unity and the symbolic continuity between the old and new centres of power. The URBS ROMA type honours the ancient capital with the iconic she‑wolf and twins, while the CONSTANTINOPOLIS type celebrates the rising prominence of the eastern capital with Victory on a ship’s prow. These small bronzes are among the most recognisable and widely collected coins of the Constantinian era.
