Carus

282–283 AD

Carus, a career soldier elevated to the purple after the death of Probus, ruled briefly but energetically during one of the most volatile periods of the 3rd century. His reign was marked by successful campaigns against the Sarmatians and a major eastern offensive that reached deep into Persian territory. His sudden and mysterious death — reported by some ancient sources as caused by lightning — brought an abrupt end to his ambitions. Carus’ coinage reflects the military character of his rule, with strong emphasis on imperial virtue, strength, and legitimacy during a time of rapid turnover in leadership.
