WJ 8739

English ’sterling bust’ Copper Alloy Jeton. Crowned bust of king facing; border of pellets. ® Short cross moline with a pellet in each angle; border of pellets. Early 14th century. Cf. Michael Mitchiner, Jetons, Medalets & Tokens, Nos. 102-103. 20 mm. The central indentation is a characteristic of English jetons of this period. It is believed to have been done to prevent them from being silvered and passed off as coins.
