Elizabeth I (1558–1603)
Elizabeth I’s coinage marks one of the most important phases of Tudor monetary reform. Early issues continued the debased standards inherited from her predecessors, but the great recoinage of 1560 restored the silver fineness and re‑established confidence in the currency. The long reign produced a wide variety of denominations, portrait styles, and mintmarks, with the milled experiments of 1561–71 offering a brief glimpse of mechanised production before the return to hammered methods. For collectors, Elizabeth’s coinage provides a rich and diverse field, combining technical interest with the political and economic stability of the later Tudor period.
