Edward III (1327–1377)

The long reign of Edward III saw some of the most significant developments in medieval English coinage. Early issues continued the Long Cross penny tradition, but the monetary reforms of the 1340s introduced entirely new denominations, including the gold noble, which became one of the most iconic coins of the Middle Ages. Experiments such as the short‑lived 1344 florin series reflect the Crown’s attempts to stabilise and modernise the currency. Changes in portrait style, lettering, and mint signatures allow for detailed classification across multiple phases of the reign, while the reopening of provincial mints added further variety. For collectors, Edward III’s coinage offers a rich and expansive field, combining technical interest with the economic and military ambitions of a transformative era.
