Edward II (1307–1327)

The coinage of Edward II continues the Long Cross penny tradition established under his father, Edward I, with only subtle stylistic differences distinguishing the two reigns. Most issues were produced at the London mint, though provincial mints such as Berwick also contributed limited output. Classification relies on small variations in lettering, bust style, and punctuation, making the series a rewarding challenge for collectors. While the overall design remained conservative, the period reflects a kingdom under growing political strain, and surviving coins often show signs of heavy circulation. For collectors, Edward II’s coinage offers a nuanced extension of the late‑13th‑century series, bridging the transition toward the more distinctive issues of Edward III.
