Gaul, Ambiani

The Ambiani were a Belgic Celtic tribe in northern Gaul, primarily in the modern Picardy region of France, around the Somme River valley, with their chief town at Samarobriva (modern Amiens). They lived in this area from the 4th century BC to the mid‑2nd century BC. Known for their skilled metalworking and trade along river routes, they were prosperous, particularly due to their gold coinage, which was widely circulated, even reaching Britain. These coins are often called “Gallic War staters.”
