HALLSTATT & IRON AGE
The following group of Antiquities (marked WHH) are all from a
hoard found in Austria.
This is a rare find as it dates to the
Hallstatt C period (circa 800-600 BC.), just when the change from Bronze Age to
Iron Age was taking place. An interesting lot, as you can see they carried on the design of the socketed
axe which must have been more difficult to manufacture in iron than casting in
the usual bronze form. Also found in
this group are the very early type of iron flat axes, proving that they were
both in use at the same time. Another rare piece from this group is the socketed
chisel, something I have never seen in iron before.
