WMA 7201

Medieval Strap-end. A copper-alloy strap end made from six separate pieces that are shaped and riveted together to form the scene of a mitred bishop holding a book ? or praying, standing on a plinth in an architectural frame. Circa 15th century. Cf. Michael Mitchiner, Medieval Pilgrim & Secular Badges, pp.20 - 24. & p.265. Lincolnshire 36mm x 19mm. It is uncertain as to who the figure represents, but it is possible that it is Thomas Becket. Also from a dating point a 15th century pilgrim souvenir from the shrine of St Mary at Priory church in Tobelaine has a framework which is similar. Patchy patina but extremely rare.
